Three shopkeepers, including the owner of a jewellery store, were shot dead by unidentified criminals in three separate instances late Tuesday evening in rural Patna, Samastipur, and Katihar districts.
Criminals robbed the shop at 8.30 p.m., police claimed, before firing at Gupta from point blank range. Atulesh Kumar, SHO of the Bihta police station, said Gupta suffered multiple injuries to his head and chest.
Mantu Kumar Gupta, the owner of Maa Vindhyavasini Jewellers in rural Patna, was shot and killed by motorcycle-borne assailants near Bihta Bazar. In the region, there are at least 30 jewellery stores. Extortion has resulted in multiple incidences of shooting and homicide in Bihta in the past.
Gupta also worked in the real estate industry. For putting up a struggle, the thieves also assaulted his driver, Neeraj Kumar. Traders on the Bihta market believe Gupta was targeted because he refused to comply with an extortion demand. According to Neeraj, the offenders fled on three bikes with no registration plates.
