Babul Supriyo, a Bengal BJP leader and former Union minister, announced his retirement from politics on Saturday, saying he wanted to devote more time to humanitarian activities. Supriyo said he had been having disagreements with certain BJP leaders in the run-up to the state elections. He went on to say that infighting among senior officials was also hurting the party.

Asansol’s two-term MP was one of several ministers who were removed from the union cabinet on July 7 as part of a dramatic reshuffle. In the most recent assembly elections, he ran unsuccessfully against Aroop Biswas of the Trinamool Congress.
