Tom Daley’s lengthy wait for gold came to an end in Tokyo in 2020.

In the final, Daley and Lee scored 471.81 points, edging Cao Yuan and Chen Aisen of China by 1.23 points. With 470.58 points, Cao and Chen chose silver.

“I feel incredibly proud to say that I am a gay man and also an Olympic champion. When I was younger I didn’t think I’d ever achieve anything because of who I was. To be an Olympic champion now just shows that you can achieve anything.”

After bronze medals in London and Rio, Daley had a very public moment of fulfillment, which coincided with his marriage to film producer Dustin Lance Black and the birth of their son, Robbie. In the glimmer of victory, Daley spoke candidly on the difficulties he has encountered throughout his life, which has been lived in a spotlight unlike any other.
