Officials reported that more than 500 individuals were eventually rescued from the tunnels in Henan province. Days of rain have caused significant damage and forced 200,000 people to flee their homes.
At least 12 people are said to have perished as a result of water flooding the city’s subway system as commuters were returning home.
On Wednesday evening, authorities announced that the death toll had grown to 25, with seven people still missing. The number is expected to rise in the coming days as more reports come in from other parts of the province, and more rain is forecast. According to officials, 1.24 million individuals were affected, and 1,64,710 people were forced to migrate.
The army has been dispatched by Mr. Xi. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Central Theater Command “dispatched about 5,700 soldiers, armed police troops, and militias” to build embankments and redirect floods to ease the strain on dams on the edge of bursting, according to state media.
Water levels in nine large reservoirs and 40 medium-sized reservoirs in Henan have exceeded flood season levels, according to government media.
