Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat was asked to quit by the BJP leadership

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat handed his resignation to the Governor on Friday. He resigned barely four months after he took charge and just ahead of polls next year in the state.

He said in Hindi, “Given the constitutional crisis, I felt it was right for me to resign. By polls could not be held because of COVID-19.”

Tirath Rawat was in Delhi for the past three days for meetings with the BJP leadership. The ruling party asked him to quit this afternoon. Soon after, he booked an appointment with Governor Baby Rani Maurya. Before he met the Governor, he handed the papers to his party chief JP Nadda.

BJP MLAs will meet today to pick a new leader in Uttarakhand.

Mr. Rawat was sworn as a Chief Minister in March. To keep the post, Mr. Rawat who is an MP, would need to win an assembly by September 10.

It is a tough decision to hold by polls now for the Election Commission, after the controversy over the March-April election in five states, held alongside rising virus cases in the second wave.

According to the sources of Election Commission, “There are many by-elections due. The Covid situation is a major consideration.”
