England batsman Ollie Pope has revealed that it was during the first Test of the four-match series that Indian captain Virat Kohli warned him that flat pitches would not be available after that. After winning the first Test in February, the England team failed to face Indian spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel and lost the next three Tests.
Pope said, "In the second innings, the pitch started taking a lot of spin. I remember that I was standing at the other end and Kohli came to me and said that this is the last flat pitch. At the same time I felt that this series is going to be very challenging in terms of batting."
Pope said even experienced players like Joe Root and Ben Stokes believed it was one of the most difficult situations. According to ESPN Cricinfo, Pope said, "I also talked to Root and Stokes and they also said that these were among the most difficult situations. If players like him are accepting this, then you can understand how challenging it must have been."
