The centenary celebrations of the visit of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in February 1921 were held on Saturday at the Tagore Grove Memorial in Ray Miller Park amid the harsh winter in Houston. The next day a virtual concert was held. The two-day event organized by the Tagore Society of Houston (TSH) was held keeping in mind the restrictions imposed due to the Corona epidemic. In addition to Houston Consul General Asim Mahajan, some invited guests and members of TSH attended. In 2013, a bronze statue of Tagore was unveiled at the Tagore Grove Memorial in Ray Miller Park on the Energy Corridor.
Under the leadership of Chairman Gopendu Chakraborty, TSH welcomed the guests and highlighted Tagore's message of universality and world peace, which is very suitable for a diversity-filled city like Houston. The Consulate General of Houston, Aseem Mahajan, during this time elaborated on the relevance of Tagore's journey, writing and vision of international brotherhood in today's world.
Celebrating the occasion of Tagore's visit to Houston a century ago to deliver lectures at Rice University on his second intercontinental lecture tour in the US is important. The trip generated considerable interest in his literary and other works throughout America. The Consulate is working together to deepen cultural ties and people-to-people contact between India and the United States. Tagore Grove is dedicated to all communities in the city as a symbol of universal peace and love. The Grove will be open to the public and TSH welcomes all. Come here and pay tribute to a cultural talent and this global icon.
