All government madrasas in Assam are being closed from April 1. More than 620 such institutions will be converted into common schools. The state government has stopped providing financial assistance for religious education due to its secular nature. On December 30, the state government passed a law in the assembly under which a decision was taken to convert all madrassas in the state run by government spending into common schools. This decision will be implemented from April 1.
State government stopped giving financial assistance for religious education
Assam Education and Finance Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that the Education Department has been approved by Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi of Assam Repelling Act -2020. However, the state government is yet to take a decision on the hundreds of madrasas operating at the private level.
Sarma tweeted that this decision of the Assam government is historic and progressive. The Madarsa Education Provincialization Act, 1995 and the Assam Madarsa Education Act, 2018 have been abolished. Now all government madrasas will operate like normal schools. However, the opposition parties of the state including Congress are opposing this decision of the government.
