Director David Yates woos 'Hannibal' and 'Rogue One' actor as his new Grindelwald
From cannibal doctor to dark magician: that may be the path for the near future of Mads Mikkelsen. Director David Yates needs the Hannibal and Rogue One star as a substitute for Johnny Depp in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise Fantastic Beasts, as per Deadline.
After losing a defamation lawsuit against the British newspaper The Sun, which had called him a "batterer," Depp, who played the dark magician Gellert Grindelwald until now was shot by Warner.
Not only can the option of the studio have the actor go to earn his entire paycheck after filming a single scene in the film, but it also requires him to find a fresh image for a role whose appearance was going to be more relevant than ever in Fantastic Beasts 3.
If Yates can get Mikkelsen into the picture, he's going to appoint one of the most talented actors of today... and one of Hollywood's least taken care of. While the Danish roles in movies (Casino Royale, Pusher) and shows (Hannibal) gained him a decent reputation, other developments such as Rogue One or the marvel Doctor Strange offered him roles well below his ability.
Will the first opportunity to see him at high revs in a blockbuster be his battle against Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law? Fantastic Beasts 3 continues its shooting in Great Britain at the moment, with a launch date set for summer 2022.
